Treatment Of Postpartum Depression

Postpartum depression is similar in many ways to other kinds of depression experienced by individuals, but the consequences of this depression can be even more threatening. Not only is there the usual threat of a depressed person doing harm to themselves, sometimes fatally, there is the even more important consideration of the health and welfare of the newly born child to consider. This is one form of depression where medical attention and constant supervision are more important than ever. Any kind of treatment program worked out by a competent physician needs to be followed and monitored closely.

The lifestyle changes, which are so beneficial to any depression sufferer, are going to be even more to be essential for a new mother. In fact, they should be implemented as soon as the mother's condition becomes known. The problem, of course, is that telling a pregnant mother that she should not be smoking, or that she should be getting more essential nutrients in her diet is obvious, but it she has a history of doing otherwise, putting this into practice can be much more challenging. But even if the mother was not following a healthy lifestyle during pregnancy, there is still even more reason why this should be implemented now. Passive cigarette smoke, for example, can greatly harm a developing child.

It is essential to start the treatment of postpartum depression by removing those things that are known to aggravate the condition. Cigarette smoking is one of these factors, and every step should be taking in trying to wean the mother off this habit. Another proven factor in aggravating postpartum depression is feeding the baby on bottled formula instead of the natural mother's milk. Avoid this practice if at all possible.

Once a more sustainable lifestyle has been achieved, often with considerable help and supervision from the medical profession, any specific drug treatments can then be started. It is strongly advised that these drug treatments be avoided for as long as possible, especially if the mother is breast feeding. Herbal alternatives are one alternative, and while their effectiveness is unproven, there are many who experience positive effects. If the depression can be overcome with natural techniques, this will be much safer for the baby, and it will be a far more satisfying victory over postpartum depression.
